In previous years, the University of Melbourne Medical School offered a graduate-entry Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) program. The final intake for the Melbourne MBBS degree was in 2009. The University of Melbourne Medical School now offers a Doctor of Medicine (MD) program, the first of its kind in Australia and the world. The Melbourne MD is slightly different from the MD presently offered throughout North America as it has a higher designation.
The Melbourne MD is a four-year, graduate-entry medical program that builds on the University of Melbourne's reputation for excellence in teaching and research. It enables students to become outstanding medical practitioners who will excel as world-class leaders in their chosen field.
The graduate attributes for the MD serve as the framework for a graduate-entry level program, building on prerequisites in anatomy, physiology and biochemistry to deliver an accredited medical practitioner, ready to optimize patient outcomes in any health setting. The teaching style will assume this prior discipline knowledge as well as generic skills and maturity to ensure these learning outcomes.
The MD is four years full-time, including one year of bioscience foundation learning, six months of full-time research and two and a half years of clinical training in university-affiliated hospitals, clinics and GP surgeries. A yearly student conference will be a distinguishing feature of the Melbourne MD and provide opportunities for broader disciplinary and inter-disciplinary learning. The teaching, student conference and assessment program is about 40 weeks per year.
